Kilpatrick adds more power to legal team

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick added another high-powered lawyer to his growing legal team, which plans to mount a vigorous defense to the perjury, obstruction of justice, conspiracy and misconduct in office charges against him -- starting with his pretrial hearing today.

James W. Parkman III, an Alabama attorney best known for successfully defending former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy, has joined former Illinois U.S. Attorney Dan Webb and Detroit attorney James C. Thomas in defending Kilpatrick in the criminal case.

"I want people to just slow down a minute and give us an opportunity to present our case. Don't kick me off 'Dancing with the Stars' until we get to the performance," Parkman, 58, said in an interview Thursday.

Man says shooting was in self-defense

MARION � A Marion man admitted in court Thursday that he shot and killed a 23-year-old Chicago man, but claimed it was an act of self-defense.

Cliff Leon Rick, 26, of 222 Park Blvd., took the stand in his own defense Thursday morning where he testified he shot Sidney M. Bell in the early morning hours of Nov. 7, but only after Bell pulled a gun on him.

Pair plead not guilty in slaying of woman, 18

A Southbridge man accused of plotting the slaying of his former girlfriend during a trip to New York was held without bail at the city's Rikers Island jail after pleading not guilty yesterday, prosecutors said.

Carlos Cruz, 36, was arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court along with his cousin, Devon Miller, 25, who police contend was the triggerman in the slaying of 18-year-old Chelsea Frazier. Both face charges of first- and second-degree murder, along with weapons charges.

The two men pleaded not guilty before Judge Judith Lieb, said Melvin Hernandez, a spokesman in the Bronx district attorney's office.

A pretrial hearing is slated for tomorrow.

"Obviously, they deny the charges. It's a tragedy all around, for everyone involved," said John Sandleitner, defense lawyer for the two men.


Trial for man accused of shooting wife delayed

A trial for a Myrtle Beach man accused of shooting his estranged wife in 2006 has been pushed back to June 2, according to 15th Judicial Circuit Assistant Solicitor Brad Richardson.

Bradley Senter, 55, is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.

Senter's trial was scheduled to start Monday at the Horry County Courthouse, but Judge Kristi Herrington delayed the trial at the request of Senter's attorney, Ralph Wilson.

"We're disappointed," Richardson said. "The state is prepared to go forward. We gave them notice back in December. The defense has assured us there will be no further continuances."

Senter's estranged wife, Dena Senter, an assistant principal at Forestbrook Middle School, was shot at his residence on Nov.


Gambia: NIA Diamond Case Adjourned

The protracted criminal trial involving six former operatives of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) was, on Monday, 14 April, 2008, adjourned for ruling on the no case submission filed by defense counsel, Lamin Jobarteh.

One of the accused persons, Salimina Drammeh had told the court that their counsel was sick. The magistrate at this juncture decided to adjourn the case.
